The condition came to light when members of Ramdoot Restores, a grassroots volunteer group committed to reviving neglected Hindu temples, were informed of the temple\u2019s deteriorating state during their weekly Sangosthi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What they found was deeply concerning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A site once revered had transformed into a drainage zone. The ghat in front of the temple had become an open sewage outlet. Shrubs, garbage, and debris had encroached upon the sanctum. Most alarming was the discovery that during the rainy season, wastewater from the drain would enter the temple premises and come in contact with the Shivling\u2014an act viewed as both disrespectful and spiritually defiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recognizing the urgency, the Ramdoot team mobilized. Volunteers were divided into task groups: one cleared the dried waste using tools, another collected and disposed of it responsibly. Others ascended the temple\u2019s structure to remove invasive growth that had overtaken the dome and outer walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The restoration culminated with a deep-cleaning using a high-pressure water jet system, thoroughly cleansing the premises and allowing the original form of the temple to re-emerge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the effort also brought unexpected revelations. During the clean-up, a local elderly woman informed the team of underlying concerns that hinted at deliberate neglect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The seriousness of the information prompted the team to request police protection as a precautionary measure for future restoration efforts. This event underscored a larger reality: the degradation of India\u2019s spiritual heritage is not always due to natural decay\u2014it is often enabled by systemic apathy or suppressed historical relevance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Shiva temple was only part of the story. The ghat takes its name from Gangaur, the spring festival of Gauri, whose immersion procession ends at the water. Chhatris and small shrines stand on and beside it, and three of the chhatris were taken up for restoration under the city’s Smart City heritage works. The steps exist so that a crowd can get down to the river and back on one day of the year, which means they only work if the bed at the bottom of them is clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was not clear. The restored chhatris stood over a channel used as tipping ground by the streets above: immersion waste, cloth, plastic, household rubbish and building spoil, layered and packed down until the bed had risen against the steps. The channel against the ghat steps was standing rather than flowing, and the shrine sat on its plinth in standing water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We worked with baskets, brooms, spades and slings over four Sundays. The structures were cleaned first, then the ground they stand on, and everything lifted was carried up to the road, not moved along the channel. The plinth of the white shrine was washed down and swept and the growth rooted in its shikhara taken off by hand; the second shrine, further along the bank, had to be found under grass and tipped rubble before it could be cleaned. Then the packed layer of cloth, ash and plastic under the retaining wall was lifted off, and silt and litter were cleared from the apron in front of the shrines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Indore Municipal Corporation saw the work in progress and brought machines to the stretch, dredging and cutting back the channel to a standard we could never have reached with baskets and slings. Both shrines now stand clear of the bed, the channel is dredged and open, and the banks are cut back and kerbed. The after photograph is the corporation’s work.
