When Citizens Lead, Change Follows: How Ramdoot Restores Ignited Action at Krishnapura Chhatri

Indore, Madhya Pradesh – In the bustling heart of Indore, the historic Krishnapura Chhatri, built by the legendary Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar, had long stood as a symbol of Indore’s rich cultural legacy. But over the years, neglect and deterioration cast a shadow over this magnificent structure.

That is, until a group of devoted individuals from the organization Ramdoot Restores stepped forward — not with demands, but with brooms, devotion, and a sense of duty.

Without any initial government support, the Indore ground team of Ramdoot Restores took it upon themselves to clean and rejuvenate the Chhatri complex. They gathered in groups, rolled up their sleeves, and carried out multiple cleaning drives to make the monument accessible and spiritually vibrant again.

But their efforts didn’t stop there.

Understanding that long-term preservation requires official backing, the team began conducting regular Sangosthis — traditional-style community meetings — to spread awareness, invite dialogue, and engage with local citizens and authorities. Through these gatherings, they built momentum, shared historical significance, and emphasized the urgent need for government involvement.

After months of persistent action, communication, and community mobilization, the government and municipal authorities finally took notice. Today, due to the sustained efforts of Ramdoot Restores, the authorities have stepped in to officially take measures toward the maintenance and protection of Krishnapura Chhatri.

The transformation is visible not only in the restored beauty of the structure, but also in the renewed sense of ownership the city’s youth and citizens feel toward their heritage. As seen in the photos from recent gatherings, the team stands united — holding banners, engaging in open dialogue, and continuing their mission of temple preservation across the region.

“This was never about waiting for change,” said one of the core volunteers. “This was about becoming the change, and inviting the system to walk with us.”

Indeed, the journey of Krishnapura Chhatri’s restoration reminds us that real change often begins with citizens — and when dedication is sincere, institutions eventually respond.
