Reviving a Forgotten Legacy: Restoration Work at a 125-Year-Old Temple in Indore

In the heart of Indore lies a 125-year-old temple, once established by the renowned Nagar Seth Shri Hukumchand. Over the years, however, neglect and encroachment had dimmed its spiritual glow. The Shivling, once a beacon of devotion, stood amidst fallen leaves and debris—forgotten by time, but not by faith.

The transformation began when the temple’s head priest called upon the Ramdoots—volunteers committed to reviving sacred spaces—to restore dignity to this forgotten shrine. Responding to the call, our team visited the temple and witnessed the stark contrast between its historical significance and its current condition.

Without delay, we began cleaning the premises, removing years of accumulated waste with our own hands. Wearing gloves and driven by devotion, our volunteers cleared the surroundings of litter and dried foliage, allowing the natural sanctity of the place to breathe again.

During the visit, our team had an insightful conversation with the temple’s priest. We discussed the temple’s needs—both spiritual and structural—and committed ourselves to its ongoing care. From that moment forward, this wasn’t just a restoration project; it became our collective responsibility.

We have since established a regular presence at the temple, organizing Sangosthis (spiritual discussions) that now echo through its halls. These gatherings have begun to bring back the spirit of community and devotion that once defined the temple’s existence.

This initiative is not just about cleaning a temple; it’s about reviving our cultural and spiritual heritage. Through such acts of service and unity, we aim to reconnect people with their roots—and honor the legacy of visionaries like Shri Hukumchand who once dreamed of such sacred spaces.
