Focus:

Stepwell (Baori) Revival

Outcome:

Complete · Tree & Growth Cleared by Hand

Pachwa Majisa ki Baori, locally called Patal Phod Baori, sits behind the Pachwa Majisa temple on Kila Road, Jodhpur. It was cut for Pachwa Majisa, the fifth wife of Maharaja Man Singh of Jodhpur, as part of a single complex: temple in front, palace beside, water behind. All three still stand, unlisted. Two Rajasthan dailies describe the baori as a two-hundred-year-old heritage structure.

When we arrived, a full-grown tree stood in the mouth of the well, its canopy filling the shaft, and saplings, shrubs and creeper had rooted across the ledges, the step runs and the parapet.

Our Approach to This Project

Rooted growth was cut back by hand, waste was lifted out of the water and the beds, and everything was carried up the same steps it came down and barrowed to the road. Volunteers worked the ledge above the arcade where roots had reached the joints, pulled floating growth off the water, and finally washed and swept the terrace and opened the approach from the lane. No machinery entered the structure and nothing was burned on site.

Twenty volunteers worked Sunday after Sunday, with residents of the lane joining in, until the carved arcade, the cusped arches and every tread down to the water were open to view again. No stone was moved. Everything here was simply taken off the building.
